It's our mission to put the right books in the right hands.

Special Needs Project is the place for books about autism spectrum disorders (ASD), learning disabilities, special education and other special needs.

We are a unique disability bookstore and offer DVD's and fidgets too. We serve families, professionals, agencies, schools and general readers with a distinctive collection of disability-related materials. Special Needs Project is dedicated to making the best information available to those who need it.

SNP began in California, in an independent Berkeley bookstore. By the early 1980's, Grays' Book Company produced a critical bibliography of  publications available at that time. Special Needs Project became a distinct entity in 1989, and has grown from a strictly local resource to today's catalog. Our experience and knowledge base equip us to assist libraries, schools and others wishing to build special collections in such fields as learning disabilities, autism, mental health, assistive technology, inclusion and independent living, disability rights.

From its start into early 2019, SNP was a constant presence and events and conferences throughout the United States, while operating from our physical location and via the internet. We actively continue through our website and online channels.

Hod Gray was in high school when he started his first bookstore. With Lynn Jehle he founded Gray's Book Company in North Berkeley in 1980. Their daughter Dolly (1971-1989) was born with cerebral palsy. An editor and former non-profit executive, he devotes full time to Special Needs Project.
