A DVD for service providers to children with disabilities.

This parent-created DVD is filled with in-home philosophies, strategies, creativity and resources, coupled with IEP strategies and resources, utilized by tenacious parents intent on ensuring their daughter with dual-sensory impairments would achieve literacy. This unique family-perspective DVD is based on a keynote presentation delivered at the Michigan AER 2014 conference by the childåÕs mother, Graciela Tiscareño-Sato. It includes raw discussion of parents' emotional journey, from grief and loss at first learning of her blindness and later of severe hearing impairments to a thirst for knowledge, action and advocacy. Follow along and learn what Dad and Mom did at home to learn, and then help teach, Braille and continuous learning to their daughter.

Their daughter was deemed "unteachable" by a kindergarten teacher. You'll see how the parents' informed advocacy and demand that IEP team members have high expectations, coupled with dedicated service providers, resulted in success. By the end of her elementary school career, she was selected as a 5th-grade advancement speaker; she finished as a Braille Bee finalist in her first competition at California School for the Blind. You and the families you serve will learn the answers to these questions and more:

... What worked in the home to build a solid, early foundation for literacy?

... What school district-provided resources made a difference to the child?

... How can I help ensure high expectations are present for the children I serve?

After the success of the family's first DVD, Letting Your ChildåÕs Wild Side Out: Raising a Visually-Impaired Baby, Toddler, PreschooleråÓ and suggestions from many educators and parents, the family created this companion DVD, with embedded video presentation, to show their daughter's journey toward Braille literacy, beginning in the home during infancy. You can use this new DVD with families with children as young as six months old, all the way through middle-school. Included are many resources and tips fine-tuned through the familyåÕs research and practical in-home experiences preparing their daughter to learn Braille. The child youåÕ'll see grow up in the DVDs is now a teen and a student at the California School for the Blind. She was recently inducted as their two-time Braille Writing Hall of Fame Champion! A portion of sales will be donated to Blind Babies Foundation.
